In The Voyage of Life, the 2nd of a 4 part series of paintings, artist Thomas Cole portrays man in his youth. The Angel watches and waves as the youth takes control of the tiller of life. In the distance, a castle hovers in the sky, a white and ethereal destination that represents his ambitions and dreams. To the youth, the calm river seems to lead straight to the castle, but will ultimately become rough, choppy, and full of rocks.
