The Wonders of the World are a collection of remnants left behind by the world's great civilizations. For over 5,000 years, humans have been pushing the boundaries of engineering, architecture and creativity. As the world's societies bloomed and withered, epic structures were left behind leaving behind a legacy that helps us better understand where we came from. This board is dedicated to all the incredible wonders of the world and celebrates the civilizations and individuals we have to thank.

Neuschwanstein Castle | Kingdom of Bavaria, 1869-1886
Neuschwanstein Castle sits in one of Germany's most beautiful provinces, Bavaria, overlooking the Austrian border. It was built by Ludwig !! of Bavaria who spent much time as a child in a castle named Hohenschwangau. The tirelessly crafted castle was built in the architectural style of the German Knights. He decided to name the castle New Hohenschwangau and it wouldn't adopt the moniker Neuschwanstein until after his death. View a collection of photos of one of the world's most famous castles.

The Grand Kremlin Palace | Tsardom of Russia, Late 15th & 16th Centuries
The Grand Kremlin Palace sits overlooking the Moskva River in Russia's capital, Moscow. It is part of a larger complex, the Kremlin, which is enclosed by a set of striking red-brick walls and also contains several other palaces and cathedrals. The initial complex was built by Ivan the Terrible during his reign as the first Tsar of Russia. This post contains a collection of photos of this incredible complex.

Himeji Castle Photography | Edo Japan, 1609
Himeji Castle is one of the best examples of Japanese castle architecture. It was built during the Edo Period, which was categorized by peace and economic prosperity following Japan's chaotic feudal period. The exterior of the castle is immaculately decorated and is one of the three Japanese castles to exhibit the Hirayama architectural style. Machu Picchu, Peru | Inca Empire, 1438-1472
Machu Picchu was built during the 15th century just before the arrival of the Spanish. It sits in the Eastern Cordillera range of the Peruvian Andes between the peaks of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu. It is thought to have been built as an estate for the Incan emperor Pachacuti. The Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world. It stands at a staggering 828 meters / 2,700 feet and was built in the modern metropolis of Dubai, one of the 7 emirates of the United Arab Emirates. It contains 10,000s houses, many hotels and a mall. The architecture of the building was based on other great buildings in the Islamic world such as the Great Mosque of Samarra. Christ the Redeemer Statue | Second Brazilian Republic, 1931
The famous statue, Christ the Redeemer overlooks the famous beaches of Brazil's bustling capital, Rio De Janeiro. After 9 years of construction weighing over 600 tons and standing at a height of 98 feet, the statue was officially opened in 1931. The Sultan Ahmed Mosque, otherwise known as the Blue Mosque, is one of the most famous remains of the Ottoman Empire. The mosque's exterior features one main dome, several secondary domes and 8 minarets. Just as spectacular as its exterior, the interior of the mosque is intricately decorated with over 20,000 handmade ceramic tiles and stain-glass windows. The Sydney Opera House is one of the best examples of modern architecture. In 1955 an international design competition was launched for a new opera house to overlook Sydney Harbour and, in 1957, the Dane, Jørn Utzon was announced as the winner. The roof of the opera house is made up of a series of shells and its interior contains 6 performance spaces including a concert hall that seats up to 2000 people.
