One of the best ways to build up your ability to do dynamic, multi-joint movements with fluidity & control - and without pain - is to get good at moving each joint in isolation.  Successful multi-joint movements depend on the contributions of many individual joints.  When one or more individual joints aren’t working well, your system as a whole can become jerky, stiff or unbalanced, and complex, loaded patterns can become unpleasant, awkward or painful.
