A unique craft of Manipur is the double-weave mat known as the kaunaphak reed mat. Known as phak in Meithei, a Manipuri tribal language, the reed used to weave the mat is called kauna.  Phak is yellow in colour and is the succulent stem of a plant that grows in water. A bunch of cut stems of the appropriate length are then woven with bamboo placed at suitable distances to give the mat its desired length. The border has an interesting pattern and is about an inch wide. The raw material, found in abundance in the area, are the bamboo splits sold in bundles of a thousand, the length varying from 30cm to 60cm and the price depending on the width and the length of the splits. As a rule the bamboo mats are flexible only in the direction of the warp as the weft consists of the rigid bamboo splits. Coloured or textured warp is sometimes used for adding colour to the mat; the bamboo can also be dyed to enhance the mat. Bamboo is a long established craft of Assam evolved through centuries of cultural and functional needs. Apart from its use in making daily products like fish traps, winnowing fans, sieves, rain shields, low stools and hand fans etc the Muli bamboo is split into half through its cross section to provide two layers. The outer layer which is stronger is used for creating the outside walls of the houses while inner soft layer is used to make partitions inside the house.
