Here are some progress photos from a recent study I did after a Peter Paul Rubens self portrait. I normally only put up reels of my work because every time I upload a photo I have taken with my iPhone, IG puts some sort of unknown filter on the photo and it changes the color and brightness quite a bit. I had to delete several shots out of this post because some of the photos were so far off it was causing 🤬 thoughts in my mind. I know others have experienced this same issue, but I wanted ...

Rubens study
This is a small 6”x8” study after a Rubens painting, “Head of a Young Man”. It’s is a little different compared to other Rubens portraits in that it’s basically a grisaille, but the are a bit of red tones on the cheek, nose, mouth and ear. The original has a more yellow/brown background but I had a panel that was already toned red, so I went with that. While this portrait doesn’t have as much color as his other works, it definitely has all the drama in the way he posed the model. I also lo...
Thayer study
I went back in for another session to plus up this angel’s eyes. I’m taking a facial features class with @valentineben and got lucky that the first few studies were ones I had worked on previously. When it comes to master studies, I feel like I can go back over and over again and find subtle ways in which the paint was handled that I didn’t see before. It was great to have Ben’s feedback on this and see how he would make changes or think about things a little differently. When you start g...
