Alexandru Ioan Cuza was Prince of Moldavia, of Wallachia, and later Domnitor of the Romanian Principalities. He strongly advocated the union of Moldavia and Wallachia. Thus, with the double election of Cuza the union of the two principalities was achieved (1826) and the new country was born with the name of Romania and Bucharest as its capital city. Also, he initiated a series of reforms that contributed to the modernization of Romanian society and of state structures.
