How to darken colors without black | Color mixing tips and advice for artists

Published on April 8, 2022
Many artists choose not to have black in the palettes for a variety of reasons. For landscape artists, it’s primarily because pure black typically doesn’t exist in nature. A pure black car on the street for example would be made up of many different reflections, shadows, and highlights - most of which would not require black to paint accurately.
Learning how to darken and mute colors without using black eliminates the need to make space for black on your palette, and also opens up the doors for many other shades and colors to be created!
This isn’t to say that you can never use black - it really depends on the style you’re going for. But learning to mix your own darkened shades and colors will help you better understand how the relationships of colors work.
