Sold $2,200 Lebanon County, Pennsylvania painted pine dower chest, ca. 1810, with an ochre sponge decorated ground with diamond surround, above three green sponged drawers supported by bracket feet, 28 1/2'' h., 51'' w.  Condition  Original hardware. Lacking center drawer brass. Repaired break to edge of one drawer. Repaired breaks and losses to lid molding. One rear foot ended out 1".

1780 American (Pennsylvania) Dower chest at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York - Sometimes also called "hope chests", young women would use one of these chests to hold the clothes, linens, etc. that she was making and saving up to take with her to her husband's house when she married.  I was more used to seeing this as a 19th century phenomenon, so it's interesting to see an 18th century example.
