Painted dower chest dated 1795 by the Embroidery artist, the lid with typical sawtooth border panel surrounded by florettes over a case with a large ivory panel decorated with tulip vines, pomegranates, etc., inscribed "Catharina Mauren", supported by bun feet, 22 3/4" h., 50" w. Artist unidentified  Pennsylvania  1790  Paint on pine with iron hardware  24 3/4 x 50 1/2 x 23 3/4 in. In German folklore, the mermaid is associated with childbirth and domestic households. These mermaids wear coral necklaces for protection; knotted embellishments, which abound on this painted chest, add to the notions of never-ending love and protection.

A superb Paint Decorated Pennsylvania Candle Box in its' original untouched museum condition…Each panel is exuberantly decorated with stylized tulips and whimsical red pomegranates…both accented with green and white foilage within mustard This box has a square nailed construction, which is still visible on the underside…The mate to this box can be viewed at The Metropolitan Museum Of Art in New York City… Just a Magnificent Pennsylvania Painted Box!!! …Ht 8 1/4" Length 14 1/2" Width 8 1/2".
