Alvin Ailey, choreographer, activist, & founder of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. He is credited with popularizing modern dance & revolutionizing African-American participation in 20th century concert dance. His choreographic masterpiece, Revelations, is believed to be the best known & most often seen modern dance performance. One of his other greatest successes, Cry, became a signature piece for Judith Jamison. He received the Kennedy Center Honor & the Springarn Medal. R.I.P.
