Meadow in the Garden of Saint-Paul Hospital 1890. The canvas echoed the subjects of those van Gogh had painted when he first arrived: flowers and the neglected gardens that surrounded the hospital. He depicted the scrubby bushes in swift lines of green, gold, tan, and black, with the sinuous trunks of trees rising in the distance. The thick impasto records Vincent's rapid strokes, as if van Gogh was compelled to finish his work and embark on the journey to his next home.
