Young woman in traditional costume, Bistrita Valley, Moldavia, north-east Romania, c1920-c1945. Depicting customs and traditional labour in the rural Carpathian Mountains in the first half of the 20th century. The main occupations in this area were the timber industry and livestock farming. The local community were Orthodox Christians who led a very conservative lifestyle.
