Anatomy & mechanism of erection. Corpora cavernosa trabecular spaces surround cavernosal smooth muscle. Helicine arteries supply to the cavernosal spaces. The dorsal nerve provides the sensory innervation to the penis. Relaxation of the trabecular smooth muscle increases blood flow result in engorgement of sinusoidal spaces in the corpora cavernosa. Sinusoidal expansion blocks the venous return, resulting in entrapment of blood causing erection.
