Born into an eminent family, Saint Gregory the Theologian Archbishop of Constantinople (4th cent Cappadocia) taught rhetoric in Athens. Wishing to become a monk, he withdrew into the wilderness with his friend Saint Basil the Great, but eventually gave in to his father's wish and became a presbyter. At that time the Constantinople church asked him to help fight heresy, to which he dedicated his subsequent, complex teachings and writings - hence the name "Theologian." He is celebrated Jan 25.
