The disposition of embroidery on this blouse is distinctly Romanian. Dense bands of geometric motifs over the shoulders and vertical bands below alternating with drawnwork bands are quintessentially Romanian. Henri Matisses friendship with painter Teodor Pallady sparked his interest in Romanian folk costume. This type of blouse was a recurring theme in Matisses work.

1927 Romanian [Princess Ileana of Romania Collection] Ivory sheepskin vest (peiptar) with predominantly black and red embroidery. Transylvania region of Romanian, inscribed ”Jacob Luca 1927.” Sheep skin ground, black leather trim, black wool trim to imitate Persian lamb, plain black buttons, decorated black buttons with painted gold flowers, wool braid and thread. Embroidery types: stem stitch, buttonhole stitch, herringbone stitch, back stitch, couching work.
