Griffith J. Griffith

Griffith Jenkins Griffith (b. Wales 1850-1919) journalist, mining speculator, money lender. In 1896, he donated his ranch, now known as Griffith Park, to the city of Los Angeles. The park contains some very well-known landmarks in Los Angeles including the Greek Theater, the Griffith Observatory and Planetarium, the famed Hollywood sign, and Walt Disney's barn. Griffith's legacy was marred by his notorious shooting of his wife in 1903 in a fit of 'alcoholic insanity.'
