I enjoy using this lens unconventionally and in my photostream you'll see photos of gates, bluebells, uncoiling ferns, foxgloves and tree branches taken at 500mm. This tranquil scene on the South Downs came about when the sun emerged after a cloudy interval lasting an hour.

https://flic.kr/p/HTU2Yg | Shimmer | © 2016 Alan Mackenzie. www.alanmackenziephotography.com Facebook I feel excited at having discovered a new location on the South Downs. Earlier, I had spent 20 minutes cowering under my jacket as a torrential shower passed overhead. It was my fault for not taking an umbrella. When the sun came out, the air had been cleaned of pollutants and the South Downs glistened with hues of yellow and fresh green. Once again, I used my 500mm lens. The crop is…

I enjoyed this opportunity to combine someone's beautiful collection of deciduous trees with the South Downs landscape.

Wherever possible, it is important to minimise unintentional disturbance, which is why, despite having visited this site for one year, I've only managed to take one good shot. Any earlier and the sun is in the wrong position; any later and most of the leaves have fallen. I tried it last year, but wasn't fully satisfied with the results, due to a slightly too long focal length. I purchased the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 lens this year and it has become my lens of choice for many…

In spring, pretty little streams flow through carpets of bluebells. Orchids and foxgloves line the glades in early summer. These beech leaves remind me of limes. My Canon 500mm lens is highly versatile and apart from shooting wildlife, it can be used for close-ups…

https://flic.kr/p/vJJnEt | South Downs National Park | © 2015 Alan Mackenzie. www.alanmackenziephotography.com Facebook This scene is situated in a very attractive corner of the South Downs. In contrast to the many wildlife deserts across the Downs, farming practices encourage wildlife to thrive. Visitors will observe Common buzzards, field mice, bats, owls, Roe deer and several butterfly species.

Isolated trees, copses and Hawthorn hedges grow across this gentle, small scale landscape. The late evening sun modelled Stanmer Down beautifully. How lucky we are to live so close to a jewel in the crown of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

https://flic.kr/p/rm8QSp | Bluebells and Ferns | © 2015 Alan Mackenzie. www.alanmackenziephotography.com Facebook Abbots Wood in East Sussex is an excellent location for bluebell detail shots. The lack of order makes clean landscape work difficult. The sight and scent of a bluebell wood is intoxicating and I'd recommend this 'legal high' to anyone.
