Persepolis - Iran * The massive palace complex of Persepolis was the glory of the Persian Empire at its peak. After Alexander the Great sacked the palace in 330 B.C., the ruins disappeared into the sands until archaeologists from the University of Chicago uncovered them in the 1930s.
