Calamansi Tree!
We're super excited about all the fruit that is setting on our calamansi tree! Also known as the Philippine lime or Calamondin orange, Citrus x citrofortunella mitis is a cross between Citrus reticulata (a tangerine) and Fortunella margarita (the Nagami kumquat). It is very sour like a lime, but the fruit will be bright orange when ripe! Thanks to our friends at Chicago Botanic Garden for the lineage. 📷 Tom Hennessy

The world’s largest and possibly oldest living organism resides in Utah

Tuliptree - Shenandoah National Park (U.S. National Park Service)
The tuliptree is one of the tallest eastern American hardwoods, and one of the tallest trees found in the park. It can often be identified from a distance because of its very straight, tapering, light-colored and evenly furrowed trunk which, on mature trees, is usually free of branches for a considerable distance from the ground. Up close, it is even easier to recognize, with its distinctive leaf shape which would be hard to mistake for that of any other tree. The large, hairless, glossy, altern

Wolf Trees: Elders of the Eastern Forest - American Forests
In the October 1945 issue of American Forests, in an article titled, “Woodman, Spare That Wolf Tree,” Charles Elliott writes, “…these ugly wolf trees, these snags, these trees classified as worthless space fillers are valuable wildlife units in the vast stretch of North American woodland.”Elliott, contrary to popular sentiment at the time, was spot on. And nearly 70 years later, we’re due to revisit the wolf tree.High above the shores of Lake Champlain, I trace a stone wall through a Vermont

Redbud is Ready for Spring - Virginia Native Plant Society
As signs of spring fill the air, I find myself eagerly anticipating the vibrant magenta pink blooms of one of our most beautiful flowering trees, the Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis). This small tree is a common sight along roadsides, woodland edges, and old fields in Virginia in late March and early April when its showy flowers create a lovely haze of magenta in the spring landscape.
