Rose (Rosa)
Roses often grow in spooky environments like cemeteries. Each color has its own symbolic meaning as well. Black roses can symbolize death and despair, while white roses represent remembrance, reverence, and purity. Many of these beautiful flowers are housed in the Louise Cochrane Rose Garden. Toad Lily (Tricyrtis hirta)
Located in our Asian Valley Garden, the flowers and leaves of this plant are spotted like toads and the flowers have warty bumps at the base. Toads are often associated with witchcraft as familiars and ingredients in witches’ brew. This pairing most likely stemmed from the belief that toads are toxic and could be used to make heinous poisons. Toad lilies are quite easy to care for when planted in the right conditions. They prefer moist, rich soil, shade or partial shade, and consistent water.

Magnolia 'Galaxy'
Coming for a visit this week? Be sure to park in Lot “B-eautiful” to enjoy a stellar show by Magnolia ‘Galaxy’. Horticulturist Jason Hechler believes we’re enjoying the best year for spring-blooming magnolias in several years, thanks to recent frost-free weather giving the blooms time to open and remain in good condition.
