British photographer Larry Burrows took a harrowing series of photos on an assignment called "Route Nine Defensive," undated in the LIFE archive. It appears to show Operation Pegasus, the combined operation by U.S. Marines and Air Cavalry in April 1968 to reopen the road from the coast to the Marine base at Khe Sanh, which had been under siege and supplied by air for several months. Willys M274 Mechanical Mule in the background.
