Born in 1906, Corneliu Baba was one of the most famous painters from Romania. Despite being primarly a portrailist, he was also known as an illustrator or a gender painter. Baba himself cited El Greco, Rembrandt, and Goya as particularly strong influences. After his death in 1997, he was posthumously awarded the Prize for Excellence by the Romanian Cultural Foundation.
