Queen Marie of Romania Queen Marie, also known as Marie of Edinburgh, was born on October 29, 1875, in Kent, England. Daughter of Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and Marie, the only surviving daughter of Tsar Alexander II of Russia, Marie was also the granddaughter of Queen Victoria. At the age of 17, she married Ferdinand of Romania, and was crowned Queen in 1914

January 23, 1991—Princess Ileana of Romania known as Mother Alexandra after becoming a nun. She founded the Monastery of the Holy Transfiguration, a community of nuns of the Orthodox Church in America. She was an aunt of former King Michael of Romania and a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II of Britain.

Princess Ileana of Romania married twice, but became an Orthodox nun later in her life. She emigrated to the United States and founded a monastery for Orthodox nuns in Pennsylvania.

Happy couple! Princess Ileana and her 1st husband, Archduke Anton, on their wedding day, 26 July, 1931. After the wedding Ileana's jealous brother, King Carol II, denied her and Anton permission to live in Romania, claiming the Romanian people wouldn't tolerate a Habsburg living on their soil.

HM Queen Marie of Romania. Died: July 18, 1938, aged 62. Marie died in Peleş Castle and was buried next to her husband in the Monastery of Curtea de Argeş. In accordance with her will, her heart was kept in a cloister at the Balchik Palace which she had built. In 1940, when Balchik and the rest of Southern Dobrudja were returned to Bulgaria in accordance with the Treaty of Craiova, Queen Marie's heart was transferred to Bran Castle in Romania.

Queen Marie of Romania, died July aged Marie died in Peleş Castle and was buried next to her husband in the Monastery of Curtea de Argeş.
