Vlad Tepes, or Vlad the Impaler, was the voivode (ruler) of Wallachia in present day Romania. He became a Turkish janissary after his father was murdered by Hungarian enemies. His father was nicknamed "the Dragon" which in Romanian is "Dracul" hence Vlad was "Dracula" meaning "Son of the Dragon."
