Urinary bladder

Learn about the important functions of the urinary bladder and how it can be affected by various conditions. Find out how to maintain a healthy urinary system and prevent bladder-related problems.
The urinary bladder is a muscular sac composed of 3 layers of smooth muscle. Since the bladder is exposed to urine for long amounts of time, its mucosa is lined with transitional epithelium to protect it from high amounts of acidity. The bladder has the unique ability to expand, which is why it has such a thick later of epithelial cells. When the bladder is empty we see rugae, or wrinkles, but when the bladder is full the rugae flatten out and expand, allowing the bladder to hold more urine.
