Teachers were constantly told to differentiate and give examples of differentiated instruction (such as tiered assignments, flexible grouping, and student choice) but I don’t remember ever being told exactly what differentiation was. It was not until years later (after taking a professional development course outside of my school district) that things clicked: Differentiation is when we modify our lesson plans and instruction to meet students where they are.
