St. Nicholas is the Patron Saint of Children. He gave his inherited wealth away helping the poor and sick. It is said that he saved 3 poor sisters from being sold into slavery by dropping a dowry down the chimney that fell into a stocking hanging to dry on the mantle.

Santa Claus, Father Christmas, St. Nick—no matter the name, everyone knows the story of this plump, jolly, bringer of gifts. Or do they?

Although St. Nicholas has become nearly indistinguishable from the Christmas figure of Santa Claus, some places have maintained St. Nicholas Day as a time when children are given special cookies, candies, and gifts.
