an altered photograph of a white bird sitting on top of a table

Thinking inside the box: romantic, obsessive and shy, Cornell never moved out of his mother’s house, yet his strange, exquisite art brought him fame and friendships with Duchamp, Dalí and Warhol

there is an old fashioned box with many items in it, including a bird and other things

This took me an age to create digitally - or so I thought until my niece who is an assemblage artist told me that, starting with a vintage apothecary's cabinet, she estimates it will take her at least a year to fill with hand made metal and fabric items. I can't compete with that!! The shadow boxes and shadows are by Maya at Scrapbookgraphics. Elements are mostly from Lorie Davidson also of SBG and the old gramophone is from Finecrafted Designs.

a display case filled with lots of assorted items

An homage to Joseph Cornell work titled; "A Parrot for Juan Gris" (1953). Which itself is an homage to Jaun Gris's artwork "The Man at the Café" (1914). Building upon the 2 other works I decided to bring a half man / half robot into the fold hinting that the next homage will be done by A.I.

a white swan in a wooden frame with an old wallpaper behind it and trees on the other side

Joseph Cornell never went to art school, but led a quiet life at the family home in New York State. In 1931, he saw an exhibition of Max Ernst's collages and by the mid-1930s Cornell was making constructions in wooden boxes, similar to the 'object-sculptures' made by the Surrealists. Cornell was a passionate collector and his work contains constant references to the past in the form of toys, and old scrap-book images, conjuring up an enigmatic vision of childhood.
