Third graders just learned completed a project that combined Math and Art! We began by looking at the art of Pop artist, Romero Britto, and his Pyramid Project in London. http://www.pyramidproject.co.uk/overview.php Students sketched four sides (faces) for their own pyramids, incorporating Egyptian symbols into each side as Britto did in his art. I turned the kids into Pharaohs! Took photos of them and printed them out. Cut and pasted onto brown paper. Then, I had the kids use markers to draw clothing and color with oil pastels. We talked about geometric shapes like pyramids and triangles. And we talked about patterns like stripes that are found in textiles. We also talked about Egyptian paintings on papyrus. Fifth and sixth grade artists started making their Egyptian masks today in art class. They worked in groups of three: one student lay plaster strips on another's face, while the third read stories or replenished supplies. The whole process ran smoothly and demonstrated trust, responsibility and control.

As much as possible, I like to tie in art projects to what the students are learning in their other classrooms. The 4th/5th grade class studies ancient civilizations and has a big unit on Egypt. In art class, I showed them a long slideshow about Egyptian art and architecture. Then, the students made a sarcophagus drawing. They all started with a shape tracer for the sarcophagus.
