Verbena Homestead Purple
This wonderful hummingbird-attracting verbena was discovered by the Georgia Gang (Mike Dirr and Allan Armitage) at where else...an old homestead. This vigorous grower is literally covered with medium dark purple flowers backed by clean, dark green foliage all summer...WOW! Verbena 'Homestead Purple' can leap small plants in a single bound, so be careful to only use it in the proper place...large expanses like service stations and interstate medians, or to cover junked cars.
Lantana camara Ham and Eggs
Thanks to Bob Snyder for sharing this deer-resistant hardy lantana he grows in his garden two hours west (colder) of PDN. Lantana 'Ham and Eggs' is an old, sterile cultivar that has been passed along in the Southeast for many years. Lantana 'Ham and Eggs' is topped from early summer until fall with flowers that open pink (RHS 73B) and then develop a central pattern of flowers which are cream with a golden eye...a summer delight for hummingbirds. Occasionally, there is a slight tinge of…

From Greg Grant's infamous cemetery wanderings comes another clone of Salvia farinacea, this one from the Texas gravesite of Henry Duelberg. Myosotis palustris Southern Blues
Back in the late 1990s on a visit to garden writer Pam Harper's coastal Virginia garden, I was amazed to see the heat-hating forget-me-not thriving. Pam shared this special form of Myosotis palustris, which we subsequently named Myosotis 'Southern Blues' and propagated to share with other warm-climate gardeners. This wonderful deer-resistant groundcover forms 6" wide rosettes of shiny green leaves connected by short above-ground stolons. The patch is adorned from spring through summer with…
Golden lace is truly one of the best new perennials in the last couple of decades for adding a bit of summer bling to your garden. After doing the green scabiosa-like rosette thing for the first year, every year thereafter you will find clusters of tall, airy, see-through 50-70" stems, topped with chrome-yellow flowers throughout the summer. After the blooms fade, the remaining floral parts retain the golden color. Patrinia scabiosifolia is a great plant to blend in the garden border or to…
Boltonia Snowbank -- Bluestone Perennials
Boltonia Snowbank - Common name:Thousand Flower Aster, False Aster, Starwort - Masses of starlike white flowers with yellow centers atop sturdy plants beginning in late summer and continuing until even after frost. Commonly called false Aster, Boltonia Snowbank is a blanket of color above upright mounds of lanced-shaped, grayish-green leaves on branching stems. One plant makes a grand show, and a row of them could be used as a flowering hedge. One of our favorites.
Geranium sanguineum Ankums Pride
Geranium sanguineum 'Ankum's Pride' is an amazing selection of the easy-to-grow hardy geranium from Holland's Coen Jansen that boasts large, intensely pink flowers, each highlighted by red markings radiating from the center of the bloom. Starting in late spring and continuing most of the summer, the compact 14" tall mound of dark-green cutleaf foliage is covered in flowers. We have found Geranium 'Ankum's Pride' to be a really great color break in Geranium sanguineum. For tough, dry, sunny…
If you have a hot, sunny, well-drained site, then you need to grow Georgia savory. Clinopodium georgianum is an amazing southeast US native that makes an 18" tall x 2' wide clumping sub-shrub. The multitude of upright stems are clothed in small, round, light green leaves that smell like high-dollar peppermint candy. Starting in late August, the clumps are adorned with hundreds of small lavender flowers. Unlike many unsavory characters you would not like to touch, plant Georgia savory where…
Verbena bonariensis is the ultimate perennial for both experienced perennial border designers as well as beginning gardeners. The blue-purple (RHS 82A), large marble-sized, branched flower clusters are borne all summer on 30" tall stalks above the narrow see-through foliage. Verbena bonariensis (latin for "Buenos Aires") is great in the garden or in flower arrangements...a hummingbird favorite. In good soils, you will find a few seedlings scattered around the garden making their own…
