Inverted Colours of the boundary between Mare Serenitatis and Mare Tranquilitatis
A piece of Mars: Abstract modern art? No, these are north polar dunes almost completely covered in winter frost (mostly CO2 ice). It's early spring in this image, and the dark sand underneath the ice is only just beginning to peak out from under the ice cover. The ice looks a little yellow because some dust from the atmosphere has settled on the ice. Soon the ice will sublimate away and reveal the spectacular dark dunes. Martian 'Blueberries' Anyone? These are little soil spherules nicknamed "blueberries" because of their shape and color. These concretions formed in the presence of water and are made of hematite mineral. They were discovered by the Opportunity rover on Mars in 2004 and provide evidence of a watery ancient Mars.
Swirling spirals at the north pole of Mars
A new mosaic from ESA’s Mars Express shows off the Red Planet’s north polar ice cap and its distinctive dark spiralling troughs. The mosaic was generated from 32 individual orbit ‘strips’ captured between 2004 and 2010, and covers an area of around a million square kilometres. The ice cap is a permanent fixture, but in the winter season temperatures are cold enough for around 30 percent of the carbon dioxide in the planet’s atmosphere to precipitate.

Mars Sand Sea
A piece of Mars: Nili Patera on Mars is an ancient volcano. Some of the old volcanic material has been blown into rather striking sand dunes. It is the first place where dunes were conclusively identified as actively moving. Here's a closeup of one of them -- the steep slip face on the downwind side indicates these dunes are moving to the lower left. This dune migrates about a meter every year. APOD: 2011 September 26 - Dry Ice Pits on Mars
Part of Mars is defrosting. Around the South Pole of Mars, toward the end of every Martian summer, the warm weather causes a section of the vast carbon-dioxide ice cap to evaporate. Pits begin to appear and expand where the carbon dioxide dry ice sublimates directly into gas. These ice sheet pits may appear to be lined with gold, but the precise composition of the dust that highlights the pit walls actually remains unknown. The circular depressions toward the image center measure about 60 m

Mars Odyssey All Stars: Reptilian Dunes
Although this may look like a hostile alien life form, it's actually a complex line of sand dunes near the northern ice cap of Mars. This image is from NASA's Mars Odyssey, one of an 'All Star' set. #mars #planet #space

APOD: 2007 August 5- The Dotted Dunes of Mars
The Dotted Dunes of Mars. As spring dawns on the Northern Hemisphere of Mars, dunes of sand near the poles begin to defrost. Thinner regions of ice typically thaw first revealing sand whose darkness soaks in sunlight and accelerates the thaw. The process might involve sandy jets exploding through the thinning ice. By summer, the spots expand to encompass the entire dunes that are then completely thawed and dark. The carbon dioxide and water ice sublime in the thin atmosphere directly to gas.

The Amazing Morphing Dunes of Mars MAY 5, 2014 These raindrop-shaped dunes are found in Copernicus Crater and are known to be rich in the mineral olivine, a mineral that formed during the wet history of Mars' evolution.
