As Claire struggles with the culture of 18th century Scotland, she is relieved when she finds a friend in Verbeek’s character, Geillis Duncan. Geillis is portrayed as a sharply intelligent woman, who is a bit mysterious. Later, after the death of her husband (whom she poisoned), Geillis finds herself on trial for witchcraft alongside Claire. To save her friend, Geillis pleads guilty to witchcraft, and reveals to Claire that she too is from the future.
