Victor Hugo described Gent as ‘a kind of Venice of the North’. He wasn’t exaggerating. Brugge may have more waterways, but its beauty has been somewhat tarnished by the tourist trade. Gent, on the other hand, receives fewer visitors but has equally pretty medieval architecture and real Flemish residents, who are immensely proud of their buzzing university town.
