Portrait of St. Matthew. The Book of Kells is many things, but above all else it is a Latin text of the four gospels according to Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Consequently, the evangelists figure prominently throughout the book. Although individual portraits of St. Luke and St. Mark were either not completed or have been lost, there is no doubt that the intention was that each of the individual gospels would be prefaced by a portrait of the appropriate evangelist.

Insular art, also known as Hiberno-Saxon art, is the style of art produced in the post-Roman history of the British Isles. Arts historians usually group insular art as part of the Migration Period art movement as well as Early Medieval Western art, and it is the combination of these two traditions that give the style its…

Gospel of St. Matthew Folio 100v is a page from the Gospel of St Matthew and provides a wonderful example of the density of invention which is often contained on a single page. As with modem bibles, the Book of Kells uses a system which makes it easy to identify particular sections or verses. The first page of a new section is invariably illuminated in either a human, animal, or abstract form. There are approximately 2,000 such letters throughout Kells, and each is different in shape and…
