The main reason why pressing the bar back and up immediately off of your chest is the most efficient is because it decreases the total flexion demands at the shoulder—When the bar is un racked, it is the most stable directly above the shoulders. Try holding the bar above your stomach, it is going to be very unstable and it will demand a lot from your shoulders. By pressing the bar back towards your shoulders immediately, we decrease this total flexion demand.
