Hairy tongue is a temporary abnormal top coating on the tongue (buildup of keratin). This can sometimes increase the length of the papillae on the tongue which gives it a hair-like appearance. The change in colour is due to food, bacteria and sometimes yeast getting stuck in the coating, making it black, green, white, pink or brown.
Fissured tongue is when there are multiple small grooves on the top surface of the tongue. It's found in about 5% of the population (in the US). It's also more commonly found in men. It's not known what causes it and no treatment in necessary (just make sure to keep it clean!)
