"Normally, when we make a mistake, three things happen. First, we get a "mistake feeling," that nagging sense that something is wrong. Second, we become anxious, and that anxiety drives us to correct the mistake. Third, when we have corrected the mistake, an automatic gearshift in our brain allows us to move on to the next thought or activity. Then both the "mistake feeling" and the anxiety disappear." [THE BRAIN THAT CHANGES ITSELF by Norman Doidge, M. D.]

10 Of The Year’s Best Science Visualizations

Every year, the National Science Foundation and the journal Science honor the most creative works of scientific imagery. Here are some of the standouts.

Cell and nerve structure illustrations by Santiago Ramón y Cajal. His original pioneering investigations of the microscopic structure of the brain have led him to be designated by many as the father of modern neuroscience. His medical artistry was legendary, and hundreds of his drawings illustrating the delicate arborizations of brain cells are still in use for educational and training purposes.
