From preschool to seniors in high school, this is one of my favorite ways to deescalate and transition kids who are dysregulated. Key tenets: #1 line of communication #2 look for things to praise along the way to encourage more of it #3 connect to disconnect (disengage) #4 prioritizing proving that they can do difficult things instead of getting stuck on processing 1. Acknowledge: social media is overwhelmed with telling people to validate and acknowledge, which is why most people get stuck

Key tenets: #1 line of communication #2 look for things to praise along the way to encourage more of it #3 connect to disconnect (disengage) #4 prioritizing proving that they can do difficult things instead of getting stuck on processing 1. Acknowledge: social media is overwhelmed with telling people to validate and acknowledge, which is why most people get stuck on the stage. Although acknowledgment is important to connecting in order to open one of communication, the goal is to move on from the stage as quickly as possible so kids don’t learn that they can show negative behaviors in order to get attention. 2. Use acknowledgment topic to find a positive thought or memory: after you acknowledge whatever your child is upset about, either stay on topic and help them find a positive thought related to it, or find an entry point to shift their focus to an entirely different topic that’s positive. When you do this effectively, you’ll notice the kids almost immediately start to become visibly regulated as they think about a more positive thought instead of negative thoughts. 3. Get them back on track: after it’s clear that they’re calmer and more receptive to moving on, find a way to get them back on track as soon as possible. This will look different based on the developmental stage. However, I found that being indirect is a great way to guide them to where they need to be. You can be indirect by asking questions instead of giving commands. 4. Disengage to promote independence: Minus unique situations that solely call for sympathy, The goal of giving help is always to promote the other persons independence so they can do things on their own. Before you even acknowledge them in the first place, you should have a goal to disengage in a timely manner so they can prove themselves that they can in fact overcome their feelings and do difficult things, while also making it clear that they can count on you to help them get back on track, not bail them out. #preschool #preschoolers #acknowledge #positvethinking #disengage #schoolcounselor | Kasabo Coaching + Consulting
