On August 31, 2012 the Sun threw a major tantrum. It started with a vast arc of material towering over its surface, a stream of plasma flowing between two sunspots. Sometimes these collapse back down to the Sun’s surface, but this one exploded, blasting hundreds of millions of tons of material out into space.    SDO captured this ridiculously awesome picture of the arc just before it erupted!

Arp 87 and the two spiral galaxies NGC 3808 and NGC 3808A, are in an early state of merging. Already a bridge between them has formed. A polar ring around NGC 3808A attests to a former fusion of galaxies. Constellation: Leo. Distance: 300 million light-years. Visual magnitude: 14.1. Type: Sc D.

At the centre of every large galaxy lives a giant black hole that swallows gas or dust clouds that stray too close. As matter spirals inwards, it is compressed into an accretion disk.
