How to create calcium supplements for your backyard hens
Dont throw away your egg shells! Bake them in the oven at 350 degrees F, for 30 minutes. Crush the shells into small pieces then offer some to your chickens daily. Your hens will know how much to eat and how often. The calcium helps your chicken lay hard shelled eggs. Chickens who are laying regularly will need and eat more, versus older hens who lay less or not at all.

Are your chickens molting? Here are two ways to help your chickens grow back their feathers!
Save for later when your chickens start to molt! Molting chickens are ugly and it takes a lot of their energy (say goodbye to lots of egg production) when they are molting. Do your chickens a favor and up their protein. This will get them back to their normal laying schedule and get their new feathers grown in quicker. Remember: Buy feed that is high in protein. I try to get a feed higher than 18% crude protein. Buy grubs for your chickens to give them as treats. These are high in protein and your chickens will love you for them! How to store your chicken eggs for winter:
Make sure to store eggs unwashed in the fridge so they’ll last the longest. Once you wash fresh eggs, they lose a protective film that allows air and water to penetrate the shell.

What you need to know about raising chickens for eggs | Backyard low maintenance chickens
Although low-maintenance, chickens do require a small amount of daily care as well as some monthly and semi-annual maintenance. Chickens need to be fed and water changed daily. They need to be let out of the coop each morning and put into the coop at dusk each night to protect them from predators. Eggs should be picked up twice a day. I also believe spending a little time and talking to your chickens not only is good for them, but for you as well. The coop and pen should be cleaned out weekly to maintain sanitation and odor control.
