Faces: Expressions of our beingness

Faces a common theme in my work. A desired reaction or goal for the viewer in a specific sense doesn't exist, generally speaking, it is simply up to the viewer. Do you feel something? Maybe? Maybe not. Today I am sharing some faces. The first one is pastel mixed with oil on paper from the 90's. I don't remember exactly when but it was one of my first faces. Untitled Portrait, Pastel & oil on paper, 1993(4?), Amy M. Adams Since I chose first an old face, going to stick with the theme and…

Portrait from paint on cardboard to print

The painting was made on cardboard from a box that was packing material from something that was purchased. Sometimes my budget is low so whatever is available in my home becomes a canvas, besides mostly things in my home have at the very least a second life. But that wasn't meant to last so it was printed on fine art paper. That won't last either ultimately but will last 100 years, whereas the cardboard well that's already in a poor state. Portrait, Prints on paper from a painting on…

New Media: Silent Witness

Silent Witness, New Media, 2016 - Amy Adams (a/k/a Yami)So you've tried to finish an oil painting on various occassions, several times in fact, but it just didn't seem to work. So for the nth time, you now take a scan of a part of the painting and mesh it with a myriad of technologies, building layer upon layer. Now you must go to the print studio tomorrow to realise a new variation, a finished version of the project that just couldn't get finished. That's what happened with my painting…

Plush Dogs Heal Hearts: A Poem for Poopsie

Plush Dogs Heal Hearts: A poem for PoopsieMy love for you is likethe sun radiant, the moon quiet, the sea vast,a pillow soft.Your ears that don't just hear, they listen. You are the flower fragrant,a worn pair of jeans.Squishy wishy face, wish upon a star, time passes oh so swiftly. When I was happy, sad, joyous, glad, mad, confused, hurt, angry. Poopsie, you were there, always.Leave a comment and let me know what you think and thanks for taking the time to read my poem. I've also shared a little…

Kelly Thomas: One of Many

Mentally ill, a diagnosed schizophrenic man named Kelly Thomas, the son of a retired police officer, is the subject of the artworks shown here. Kelly Thomas was one of many people who were killed by police in the USA in recent years. Unfortunately we are hearing more and more about police committing crimes against humanity. Maybe they were doing it all along and technology has simply brought it to light. It doesn't matter to Kelly Thomas because he is dead. Kelly Thomas was beaten to death…

Feathers: birds of a feather flock together at least in this painting they do

Often my work is in a themed series but consistently animals have found their way into my work, I adore them. Usually in between series and sometimes a series in itself. This painting, Feathers, of birds gathering at water was created in January 2016 this year. It was realised with acrylics on a heavyweight paper and measures 42x30 cm or 16,5354x11,6929 inches. Feathers, acrylic on paper 42x30 cm, 2016, Amy M. AdamsI also created a digital version using a filter from GIMP that created a…

The shadow, a part of our nature

We all have a shadow side, sometimes we balance it with our 'light' and sometimes it dominates us. We can't deny it. I hoped to capture the shadow in this work and in a gif especially (see the twitter link for the gif below the video since there were technical problems with niume.) The work is based on the drawings shown below and was based on a character from a film. UPDATE: When I originally posted this article, I had forgotten that a mp4 was made, so now below you can view the video here…

Embrace Revisited: Maybe love stays? Maybe love can’t.

A few years ago or more precisely more than a few years ago, 2008 and 2009, I created a series of paintings - Embrace. Recently I revisted one of the oil paintings, a couple standing together. I didn't repaint it in the physical world but digitally since the actual painting is tucked away in an area that is almost impossible to access in my apt. The series was all about love. Here is the painting revisited and digitally manipulated and layered and edited with both deepdream and GIMP software…

Angels and Icons Series: Cynocephalus Dog Headed Saint

Recently I've been working on my Angels and Icons series and this is my second icon of a Saint that is recognised by various christian religions. In the orthodox tradition he is usually shown as a Cynocephalus, meaning a dog headed being that was extremely tall. They are thought to have lived in caves and have traded with human beings. My modern icon series keeps some traditional elements but isn't bound to tradition or rules and includes other symbols and even at times composites the…

Ode to Picasso

As much as I have always admired Pablo Picasso throughout my life, often my eye was drawn to and I've focused on other artists. Recently having rediscovered some books with his works and of course looking at a lot of his work online as well felt inspired to make a colourful portrait of him. Plus I just wanted to paint for the sake of painting and making something fun, so I decided to make a square wooden panel painting as an ode to this great master. Ode to Picasso, tempera/acrylic on…

Painting: Mother and Child

Sometimes an artwork is created based on an old idea. Sometimes an idea waits for the right time. This summer looking through some older sketches of ideas of paintings that were waiting to be made, this painting came to being. Mother and Child, tempera & acrylic on wood panel (50x37cm), 2016The original sketch was inspired by a woman and her child that I knew many years ago. They were experiencing personal struggles and the idea was to show them fleeing from them. Which is not what happened…
