nursingnerds: Left-sided heart failure occurs when the left ventricle is not pumping blood out of the lungs sufficiently. Because of this blood backs up into the lungs, resulting in pulmonary congestion — patient develops crackles and dyspnea. Nursing Care: Pt’s are usually on O2, head in high fowlers, and Lasix given to help pull back fluid from lungs into the intravascular space.
Congestive Heart Failure: What Does It Mean?
Systolic left ventricular dysfunction (or systolic heart failure) occurs when the muscle in the heart’s left ventricle doesn’t contract with enough force, so less oxygen-rich blood is pumped throughout the body. Heart failure with preserved left ventricular function (diastolic heart failure) occurs when the heart contracts normally, but the ventricles do not relax properly or are stiff, and less blood enters the heart during normal filling....................
