Today In First Grade

I love the seasons and weather. It is by far one of my favorite science units. Now... that being said, can I just say it is hard to talk about the seasons where I teach. I mean really... it pretty much looks the same here year around. Sure we have a few leaves change, but nothing like the pictures and books describe, so the seasons are actually difficult for my kids to really grasp. But we push on anyway with pictures and descriptions of the way places look in the various seasons. So...to…

Wacky Weather Fun

The kids learned all about weather a few weeks ago so I wanted to show you all of the fun activities we did! To start, we brainstormed all the different kinds of weather we knew of after watching a weather video and reading a weather book. We read many different weather books including Weather and Seasons, Four Seasons for Little People and The Wind Blew. For the whole week, we tracked the weather in our science journals by writing the date and drawing a picture of the weather outside. The…

What's the Weather?

Last week we learned all about the weather. Unfortunately because of spring break, we had to cram a lot into our week. Next year I plan on taking two weeks to teach my weather unit. There was so much that I wanted to do, but just didn't have time to do it. We started our week by making a web of different types of weather or different weather words. {Please pardon my terrible handwriting.....this day our "Chit-Chat" message took waaaaay longer than normal so we were in a bit of a rush to do…

WEATHER WORDS This activity would be a simple, yet engaging, way for students to share their own ideas about weather. Together, the whole class would brainstorm common weather terms and put them on display for the rest of the seasonal weather unit. Redirecting

We started our unit on weather today. We began by discussing some words that come to our minds when we think about weather. I created a list on chart paper. Next, I had each student choose a word to write and illustrate on a raindrop for our Weather Words bulletin board in our classroom. Next, we thought of some things that we already know about weather and listed them on the sun. After discussing some things we already know about weather, students wrote on their own page what they already…
