The Moon in a Jar

"Selene was the titan goddess and the divine personification of the Moon. She was a daughter of Hyperion, the titan of light, and the sister of Eos and Helios, correspondingly the titans of dawn and the Sun. Selene’s dearest lover was Endymion, who was granted eternal youth and immortality on the condition of spending his life asleep. Selene visited him every night and the couple had many children, the most notable of whom were the Menai, the goddesses of the lunar months."

Nikolai Blokhin, Accordionist 35"x26" sauce on canvas, 2006. This drawing shows the blokhin's use of selection in how he develops certain aspects of his drawings. Here we can see that he fully develops the head, and the right hand so we can see the detail of those features. But then he just leaves a finished contour and light shading to other parts of the drawing such as the accordion, and the shoulder. This use of developing and undeveloping creates space, and unity in the work
