The octopus is a cephalopod of the order Octopoda that inhabits many diverse regions of the ocean, especially coral reefs. Octopuses are characterized by their eight arms, usually bearing suction cups. These arms are a type of muscular hydrostat. They have neither a protective outer shell like the nautilus, nor any vestige of an internal shell or bones, like cuttlefish or squid. Like goats, octopuses have unusual, rectangular pupils, but for some reason it’s not as off-putting to look at octopus in the eyes. Maybe because they’re so alien-looking all around and are surrounded by all the other weird and creepy creatures of the sea? One of the coolest things about an octopuss eyes is their ability to rotate and maintain a horizontal position, no matter what other position or angle the octopus’ body moves in.
