Amazing collection of child labour portraits: one of the spinners in Whitnel Cotton Mill. She was 51 inches high. Has been in the mill one year. Sometimes works at night. Runs 4 sides - 48 cents a day. When asked how old she was, she hesitated, then said, "I don't remember," then added confidentially, "I'm not old enough to work, but do just the same." Out of 50 employees, there were ten children about her size. Whitnel, North Carolina.

I thought this was quirky and cute…then I read the caption.  For real?! . Via weirdvintage: Sending a child through the post, 1900 “After parcel post service was introduced, at least two children were sent by the service. With stamps attached to their clothing, the children rode with railway and city carriers to their destination. The Postmaster General quickly issued a regulation forbidding the sending of children in the mail after hearing of those examples.” - Smithsonian

This photo is part of a collection from Lewis Hine, who documented child labor in the early 20th century. This photos was a 12 year old working in cotton/textile. Most of the children that worked in these mills had major health problem, sometimes causing death, from breathing in the lint that floated heavily in the air.
