Illustration of a Dacian War 2nd Century CE legionary, for Roman Miltary Equipment 2nd Ed. by Bishop & Coulston. Note the arm armor. This addition to the legionary's rig was as a direct result of dealing with the Dacians' falx. This dreaded weapon, similar to a large sickle, came in two variants: the long falx or a shorter, one-handed weapon called a sica. Either one could lop off a man's unprotected arm with relative ease.
